Why not? You’ll still get to enjoy a special meal, and setting a festive table for more than two just adds to the excitement.  An assortment of  rosy-hued candles and flowers will create a simple yet striking Valentine’s-inspired table…and you can make the meal even more memorable by giving each family a chance to say something nice about the others.

p.s. Add sound effects to your candle display with WoodWick candles (they come in red, too!) – a natural wooden wick creates the sound of a crackling fire while it burns.

Creative Winterization

5 ways to cozy up your home

Reclaiming your spaces is certainly a post-holiday perk.  No longer are you tripping over boxes and bows – or continually sweeping up tree needles.  But after the festive feeling of the holiday season, some of us may feel like our homes are a bit stark once the trimmings are all packed away.

With the cold weather, we’ll be spending more time inside than ever. Here are 5 easy ways to “winterize” your decor, to give your home more of that warm ambiance we love to snuggle up to.

Even if you are not “overhead light challenged” – free standing lamps can be a staple in your home decor wheelhouse. They offer focused light where you need it, and a warm glow to a room when used alone.  And when you’re ready for a change, moving a lamp to a different room couldn’t be easier.

Real or Fake: It’s All Green.

christmas-tree-decoratedMore than 79% percent of all American households will display a Christmas tree in their home this holiday season. That’s a lot of trees … more than 94 million!

But as much as we all love to deck our halls with a holiday tree, there are definitely two different camps when it comes to the type.  You know what, though? Artificial or real, they’re both green.

A study by Life Cycle Analysis comparing artificial and real trees found that neither one has a major impact on the environment. Interestingly, what makes more of a difference are factors like length of ownership, disposal method and “tree miles” (how far your tree travels to get to you).

So there’s no right answer. But here are few things to take into consideration:

fresh cut Christmas-Trees1. Stay local. If you get a live tree, purchase one that’s grown locally, if you can.

2. Think about tree miles. Not just how far the tree traveled, but how far you travel to get to the tree.

3. The magic number is about 9. If you’ve purchased a cut tree for 9 years or more, consider transitioning to an artificial tree.  If  you already own an artificial tree, make sure and keep it in use for 9 years.

4. Disposal is important with both types. If you plan to transition from artificial to real, donate your tree rather than disposing of it.  If you have a real tree to dispose of after the season, make sure to check with your town on how to dispose of it properly.

watering the tree
The most important part of keeping a live Christmas tree healthy is making sure it gets enough water from the start. The first day it will downright guzzle: up to a full gallon of water in 24 hours. Don’t let it dry up: if it does, the base of the trunk develops seal that prevents it from drinking in more water.

Whether you go artificial or fresh, Snow’s has a large selection of both.  Artificial trees are from 2’ to 7’ tall and come in a variety of shapes to suit your home and decor.  You can also purchase pre-decorated (and pre-lit!) trees in a variety of themes, such as gardening, pets and ‘country’ Christmas.

If you prefer a fresh cut tree, you will find a lovely, lush selection at Snow’s. And of course,  a friendly  staff member will be happy to give you tips on keeping it fresh before securing it safely it to your vehicle.

Happy trimming!

Home for the Holidays: Tips for Getting Ready

It’s a familiar feeling. We’ve hardly finished washing the dishes from Thanksgiving – and the Christmas season arrives, with bells on.

If you play host or hostess for the holidays, a good game plan will help you get your home in order more easily.  After all, the best gift you can give your loved ones is to be relaxed and joyful, knowing you have the prep work squared away.

Here are 5 ideas for getting ahead of the holiday rush:

make ahead soup#1 Make Meals for Crunch Time
There are definitely some holiday treats – like cookies – you can make ahead and freeze. But if you can also squeeze in items like casseroles, soups and stews, you’ll appreciate having an easy home cooked meal when the rest of your schedule gets tight.

Find it at Snow’s: canning jars, slow cookers, oven safe cookware, reusable / portable food containers

#2 Pack, Purge and Polish
Before you start filling closets with gifts from Santa, make some room by sorting through your clothes and making a dash to Goodwill. After the purge, you can give the house a thorough cleaning – before that task overwhelms you.

Find it at Snow’s: household storage containers, cleaning products (including all-natural and non-toxic cleaners)

cape cod wreath#3 Enhance the Entryway
When holiday visitors come-a-knocking, a festive entryway will let them know good times are waiting inside. Sometimes less is more: a single lush, live wreath with some seasonal accents can transform a front door.

Find it at Snow’s: live wreaths and trees, garland, decorative holiday trimmings

#4 Create a Welcoming Washroom
Except for the kitchen (everyone really spend time there!), your bathroom is probably the most visited room in the house. Freshen up the space with some special soaps, lotions and perhaps a lightly scented candle or two… your guests will appreciate the effort.

Find it at Snow’s: premium lotions and soaps, bath accessories, towels, candles and diffusers

puzzle#5 Stock Up on Fun
We love the food, we love the gifts. But what’s better than doing nothing more than sitting down to play a game? Your friends and family will jump at the chance to break out a classic board game, work on a big puzzle, or simply relax and connect with one another.

Find it at Snow’s: toys, games and puzzles for all ages, including the classics!

Game Day Decision: 3 Ways to Cook a Turkey

The countdown to November’s big holiday meal is on. Mashed potatoes? Check. Stuffing? Check. Cranberry sauce? Check. The 20 pounds of turkey you need to cook when you have a houseful of guests and an over-committed oven? Hmm.

While a roasted Thanksgiving turkey is by far the most traditional, there is more than one way to get the job done.  Here are three techniques that just may prompt you to consider something different this year.

Classic: Roasted

The most obvious choice first, a roasted turkey is a known quantity for most us of, so perhaps the most comforting. And no doubt, delicious. Yet there are many ways to roast a bird – a quick Google search for “roasted turkey recipe” yields more than 850,000 results. Yikes.  This how-to video from All Clad is one you can trust.

Creative: Barbecued

barbecued turkeyIt seems like we should call this a grilled turkey, except that it doesn’t sit directly on the grate, so it’s really more accurate to say barbecued.  As uncommon as is seems, cooking the bird this way is a Snow’s family tradition, and they say once you try it, you’ll never go back.  Check out our post from last year that describes the process.

Carefree: Slow Cooked

If you plan on having a turkey breast this year, using your slow cooker is a great option. Whether you have a few “white meat only” eaters – or lots of guests and need more than one turkey – this idea may come in handy.  Check out this easy recipe from Eat at Home Cooks:

Slow Cooker Turkey Breast

No matter how you prepare you bird this year, we’re sure it will be great. And as you get all your ducks – or turkeys – in a row, the friendly staff at Snow’s will help you select the perfect roasting pan, grill, slow cooker or kitchen gadget to help make your holiday meal a success.

Get Your Home Holiday-Ready with Ben Moore’s Color of the Year

The holidays are on their way, and so are your holiday guests. To get your home ready for a season of good cheer, there’s nothing that brightens up a space more than a fresh coat of paint.

What’s also nice about painting before the holidays is that you can select colors that do double duty – they play off your seasonal decor, yet remain relevant the whole year through. Sound interesting? Then we have a palette to inspire you.guilford green

Benjamin Moore just announced their 2015 Color of the Year: Guilford Green.

It’s a neutral , silvery green (how “holiday” is that?) that ties together the other sublime shades in Ben Moore’s 2015 Color Trends collection. Layering these colors throughout your home helps to create a graceful flow from room to room. Four main color families are featured for 2015: Berry, Green, Blush and Blue. Again – gotta love the timeliness of these new colors… Berry + Green = Beautifully festive!

color ideasTo see how some of these gorgeous paint color combinations might look, Benjamin Moore has a couple of great online tools:

Personal Color Viewer – A virtual visualizer lets you see how paint colors will look before you even pick up a brush.

Color Gallery – Color selection tool with access to their 3,500 colors and countless color combinations.

Of course, choosing paint colors isn’t always something that can be done online. It may be a way to get started, but talking it out with a real live person often feels much more reassuring.  That’s what we’re here for…Snow’s paint department is always eager and ready to help.
